JOHOR BARU: Form Five “graduate” Lim Xin Huo may be suffering from visual impairment but he has set his sights on becoming a successful businessman in the near future.
The 18-year-old was born with the defect caused by a nerve problem in his eyes and was forced to hold reading materials very close to his face in order to read or write.
Although it was physically straining, the soft-spoken lad said that he did not want to let his weakness be an excuse for failure and went on to obtain 7As, 1B and 1C for his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations last year.
He said that he began studying for his Form Five syllabus when he was in Form Four because he did not want to fall behind in class due to his eyesight.
“I keep telling myself that if I put in enough effort, success will follow. I know there are more challenges out there but at least this is a start for me,” said Lim from SMK Ayer Baloi, Pontian.
He said that his teachers and classmates were patient and gave him a lot of help by lending him notes for him to copy, as he could not read from the blackboard.
He was among the SPM and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) candidates who achieved excellent results in the state and recognised by the Johor Education Department in a awards ceremony here on March 5.
Orang asli student Afifah Fatini Sulaiman is proud to be the only student from her village in Felcra Sungai Layau, Kota Tinggi who achieved excellent SPM results.
Afifah, who aspires to be an accountant, said that her Mathematics teacher was the source of inspiration for her to do well in her studies.
“The way he teaches the subject and makes it easy to understand and I managed to get an A+ for Mathematics and A for Additional Mathematics in the exams,” she said.
The Sekolah Tun Fatimah student hoped to further her studies in accountancy to become a chartered accountant, as she has always been interested in numbers.
