SP Setia Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the annual award was to acknowledge students’ effort in doing well in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah examinations last year.

Forty-three children were awarded with excellence awards for scoring straight As; 42 received outstanding awards (for those who scored 4As in government schools or 6As in vernacular schools) and the rest received awards for most improvement.

Each student received an English-Malay dictionary,  a motivational book The 7 habits of Highly Effective Teenagers and  cash prizes.

SAP was established in 2000 to provide scholarships to underprivileged students.

“The foundation has also offered scholarships for college and university students,” said Lee, adding that  now 11 of the “adopted” children are pursuing their tertiary education.

“We believe by giving them equal opportunity for education, we can make their lives and the country better.

“It’s the foundation’s role to provide the necessary assistance to ensure these students are competitive and successful.”

Lee said parents must be present at the ceremony and also must attend  activities organised by SP Setia.

“This is a criteria  for their children to be continuously eligible for the scholarships.

The scholarship, given annually, are worth between RM900 to RM1,000 for primary school students; RM6,250 at diploma level and between RM8,000 to RM14,000  for a bachelor degree student.

“I hope parents will pay attention to their childrens’ education and always guide them.”

Char Jee Sie, 18, who is currently doing a science foundation programme at Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman  shared his experience as a beneficiary of  the scholarship programme.

“The foundation have been  sponsoring me for the past nine years,  and gave me the opportunity to step into university life.”

“Not everyone gets a chance for this scholarship, so my advice to   recipients is to appreciate the assistance  and make  good use of the money.”

SP Setia also gave out excellence service awards to 20 teachers.

This year, SK Taman Daya, Johor Bahru, SJK(C) Kong Nan, Batu Pahat and SJK(T) Palaniandy, Kepala Batas won awards for the Best School category.
